Ahead of the Alaska Summit, Kim Jong-un Reaffirms Full Support for Putin

Light House Denver – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. The conversation took place just days before Putin’s scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska to discuss the war in Ukraine. The conversation was reported by international media on August 12.

During the call, Putin expressed his gratitude for North Korea’s support of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. The two leaders were said to have exchanged views on strategic issues of mutual interest.

Strong Support from Pyongyang

North Korea’s state media reported that Kim Jong-un vowed to continue providing support to Moscow. He reaffirmed his full commitment to the spirit of the DPRK-Russia Treaty signed in 2024 and his readiness to back all measures taken by the Russian leadership in the future.

KCNA emphasized that both countries are determined to strengthen strategic cooperation “in all areas” under their mutual defense pact.

Preparing for Russia-U.S. Diplomacy

The Kremlin confirmed the conversation and stated that Putin had shared information with Kim Jong-un in the context of his upcoming talks with Trump. Analysts view this as part of Moscow’s effort to consolidate support from its strategic partners before engaging with Washington in what is expected to be a tough round of discussions.

International observers note that the intensified communication highlights the deepening Russia-North Korea relationship. They emphasize that both countries face global isolation due to international sanctions.

Russian Parliamentary Delegation to Pyongyang

It has also been reported that Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s State Duma and a close ally of Putin, will lead a Russian parliamentary delegation to Pyongyang on August 14-15. The visit marks the 80th anniversary of North Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. It also commemorates the end of World War II.

The trip’s agenda includes discussions on economic, defense, and technological cooperation. Observers speculate that it may also involve a possible new arms supply agreement.

A Strengthening Alliance

In recent years, Russia and North Korea have expanded their cooperation in trade, military training, and political support at international forums. Both nations face sustained pressure from the West and view their partnership as a shield against diplomatic isolation.

With the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska just days away, Moscow and Pyongyang are preparing to play an important role in upcoming geopolitical dynamics. They aim to influence the future of the Ukraine conflict and the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region.
