The Tragic Accident

The fatal accident occurred when the car driven by Diogo Jota and Andre Silva hit a roadside barrier after suffering a tire blowout. The vehicle caught fire immediately after the crash, leaving both brothers unable to survive the incident. This heartbreaking tragedy deeply shocked many people, especially fans and Jota’s teammates at Liverpool.

Following the accident, the bodies of both brothers were recovered and formally identified through autopsy and DNA testing conducted by the Spanish Institute of Forensic Medicine to confirm their identities.

Funeral Procession in Their Hometown

According to Portuguese media outlet Renascenca, the remains of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva arrived in Gondomar, Portugal, on Friday, July 4. A final tribute ceremony was held that afternoon at the Chapel of the Resurrection in Gondomar. They held the funeral Mass the following morning at the Matriz de Gondomar Church. The church stands next to the chapel.

Originally, the family and the funeral home scheduled the funeral for Friday afternoon but postponed it to Saturday morning.

“The brothers’ remains will arrive at the Chapel of the Resurrection for the final tribute tomorrow, and the burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday,” said local priest Jose Manuel Macedo, as reported by Renascenca.

Attended by National Figures and Liverpool’s Final Tribute

The funeral service was led by the Bishop of Porto, D. Manuel Linda, and was attended by several prominent figures from Portugal, including President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who came to pay his final respects.

Liverpool FC, Jota’s club, also expressed their deep condolences. As a mark of respect, the club lowered the flags at Anfield to half-mast. In addition, Liverpool opened a condolence book for fans to sign. Fans left messages to honor Jota, who made a significant impact during his time with the club.
