Woman Suddenly Becomes Deaf Due to Dead Lice in Her Ear

Light House Denver – A 21-year-old woman from Dharan, Nepal, experienced sudden become deaf, ear pain, and dizziness. The unexpected symptoms raised concern as they progressively worsened. Upon examination, doctors discovered the cause of her condition was a dead lice lodged in her ear.

Deaf Symptoms and Examination Lead to Alarming Discovery

The woman reported sharp pain in her right ear, accompanied by progressively worsening hearing, vertigo, nausea, and tinnitus, which is the sensation of ringing in the ears. These symptoms emerged suddenly, about a week before she sought medical attention. Upon visiting the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, doctors observed that her right ear canal was blocked and inflamed.

A hearing test revealed severe hearing impairment in the affected ear, suggesting that the nerve responsible for detecting sound was not functioning properly. Further investigation revealed an object inside the ear, which turned out to be a dead lice. This discovery shocked the medical team. The case highlights the importance of clinical assessment and prompt treatment in cases of ear infestations.

The doctors noted that incidents like this could lead to serious complications, including permanent hearing loss and facial paralysis. Lice saliva contains toxins that could damage the nerves. The pain the woman experienced was likely not directly caused by the lice itself, but by enzymes in the lice’s saliva, which triggered inflammation.

Risks of Serious Complications from Lice Infestation

This inflammation led to a condition known as acute labyrinthitis, which is an inner ear infection that can affect balance and lead to symptoms like nausea and tinnitus. The saliva from the lice can release neurotoxins that block acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in muscle control. When acetylcholine is inhibited, it can lead to respiratory problems and paralysis.

The doctors used a suction device and forceps to carefully remove the lice from the woman’s ear. Following the extraction, she received anti-inflammatory medication. After a month, her condition significantly improved, and all of her symptoms disappeared. The case underlines the significance of prompt medical intervention in preventing further health issues caused by unusual infestations.
