The Rich and Poor Can Be Seen on the Face, Research Proves!
Light House Denver – Did you know that the faces of the rich and poor can appear different, according to research conducted by the University of Toronto? The study shows that a person’s social class can be reflected in their facial expressions, even without directly assessing their social status.
This study involved 80 black-and-white photos of men and 80 photos of women, all with neutral facial expressions. The photos were free from accessories or any other elements that could influence judgment. Half of the subjects in the study were wealthy, while the other half were from the working class. The photos were then shown to a group of people who were asked to guess the social class of the individuals in the pictures.

The results were quite surprising: more than half of the respondents (68%) correctly guessed the social class of the subjects. Even more interestingly, many of them did not know how they were able to make the correct guess. They simply felt confident based on what they saw in the subjects’ facial expressions.
“When asked how they could make the correct guess, they didn’t know. They were unaware of how they were able to do it,” said R-Thora Bjorsdottir, the lead researcher of the study.
In a paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the researchers found that wealthy people tend to have facial expressions that appear happier and less anxious. In contrast, people from poorer backgrounds often look more stressed and anxious. The study reveals that this difference is likely due to the stress experienced by those struggling to meet their basic needs, while wealthier individuals are generally more financially and emotionally stable.
However, another researcher, Nicholas O. Rule, warned about the potential negative consequences of judging people based solely on their facial expressions. He explained that judging someone by their face could reinforce social stereotypes and create injustice. “Facial perceptions of social class may have important consequences, one of which is potentially reinforcing the cycle of poverty,” said Rule.
This research provides new insights into the relationship between facial expressions and social status. However, it’s important to remember that judging someone solely based on their physical appearance can be harmful and unfair.
