Thai Police Arrest Chinese Hacker Who Stole
Light House Denver – Jungkook BTS’s shares became the primary target of a Chinese hacker who infiltrated accounts and assets of prominent South Korean figures. The 34-year-old perpetrator was finally arrested in Thailand and extradited to Incheon, South Korea, on August 22, 2025, at 5:05 a.m. local time. The South Korean Ministry of Justice confirmed that the extradition process was carried out under tight security due to the massive financial losses involved.
Upon arrival in South Korea, the hacker was immediately taken in for intensive questioning regarding his scheme, which drained funds totaling KRW38 billion, equivalent to Rp445.75 billion. Authorities revealed that he organized an international hacking network that infiltrated multiple major websites, including large telecommunications operators, between August 2023 and January 2024.

His method involved illegally collecting personal data, opening mobile phone accounts using stolen identities, and transferring funds from financial accounts to cryptocurrency wallets. These tactics allowed him to disguise transactions, making detection extremely difficult in the early stages.
The hacker’s victims were far from ordinary. They included corporate executives, venture company CEOs, and high-profile celebrities. Among the most notable victims was Jungkook of BTS.
According to a report by Allkpop, the hacker accessed and stole 33,500 HYBE shares worth KRW8.4 billion (approximately Rp98.53 billion) from Jungkook’s securities account in January 2024.
The scheme did not stop there. The hacker sold 500 of Jungkook BTS’s shares for KRW126 million (Rp147.8 million) to a third party. This illegal transaction triggered HYBE to detect the suspicious circulation of its shares and freeze the related account.
Jungkook’s legal team later filed a lawsuit with the Seoul District Court to reclaim the sold shares. The court ruled in Jungkook’s favor, declaring the purchase invalid and ordering the buyer to return the shares.
Investigators from the Seoul Metropolitan Police worked closely with Interpol to track the hacker’s movements. Interpol confirmed that the suspect entered Thailand in April 2025. Following this discovery, South Korean authorities requested assistance from Thai police to carry out the arrest.
The hacker was eventually apprehended and extradited to South Korea on August 22, 2025. Officials described the arrest as a significant success in international cooperation against cross-border cybercrime.
Currently, the Seoul Metropolitan Police are interrogating the suspect, examining the confiscated items, and processing a formal arrest warrant. Given the enormous financial damage, the legal proceedings will take a lengthy and complex path.
A source from the Ministry of Justice stressed that the South Korean government will continue to pursue and strictly punish hacking networks, voice phishing operators, and online fraud schemes based overseas. This commitment, they added, is vital to protecting citizens and maintaining national financial stability.
