Buzz Over TikTok Live Suspension in Indonesia, Company Issues Official Statement
Light House Denver – The TikTok Live feature suddenly became completely unavailable nationwide on Saturday evening (August 30, 2025). Users began reporting disruptions around 9:00 p.m. local time, with hashtags related to TikTok quickly trending on other social media platforms. Many content creators expressed frustration, saying they lost an important channel to interact directly with their audiences.
The suspension coincided with massive demonstrations that have been ongoing since Monday (August 25, 2025). The protests were triggered by issues surrounding increased allowances for members of parliament and the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, who was reportedly run over by a police tactical vehicle. Tensions on the ground have escalated, with concerns about the rapid spread of provocative content through social media.

In response, a TikTok spokesperson clarified that the Live feature was temporarily disabled as part of additional safety measures.
“In light of the increasing violence during protests in Indonesia, we are implementing additional safety precautions to ensure TikTok remains a safe and respectful space. As part of these measures, we have voluntarily suspended the TikTok Live feature in Indonesia for the next few days. We are also actively removing content that violates our Community Guidelines and closely monitoring the situation,” the spokesperson said on Saturday (August 30, 2025).
Many creators argued that this decision reduced their engagement with audiences, particularly those who rely on live streaming as a source of income. However, some users considered the move reasonable, viewing it as a preventive measure to stop potential misuse of the feature amid heightened political tensions.
Digital media analysts noted that TikTok’s action reflects the responsibility of a global platform. It plays a crucial role in controlling the flow of information during times of crisis. Still, the decision has sparked debates over the fine line between ensuring public safety and limiting freedom of expression.
So far, TikTok has not provided a clear timeline for when the Live feature will be restored in Indonesia. The company stated it will continue to monitor developments and share further updates in the coming days.
