Light House Denver – Jyoti Smith, a young woman from England. She shared her emotional journey after doctors diagnosed her with terminal cancer at the age of 25. Now 34 years old, she describes the experience as a nightmare that shattered her young life.
Jyoti explained in an interview with Metro UK, “I suffer from a condition called pulmonary fibrosis. A restrictive lung disease that doctors cannot cure. They denied me a double lung transplant because reduced mobility in my esophagus increases the risk of stomach acid leaking into new lungs and damaging them.”

Doctors initially estimated her life expectancy to be three to five years when they diagnosed her at 25. However, Jyoti defied all odds and has lived for nearly a decade beyond the original prognosis. She attributes her survival to intensive medical care and her decision to receive treatment at a hospice.

Jyoti’s symptoms began long before her official diagnosis. At 16, she started experiencing unusual symptoms that gradually worsened. Doctors initially identified arthropathy, a painful joint condition, as the cause. Although her symptoms were sporadic and mild at first, her health deteriorated significantly over time.
Doctors delivered devastating news two weeks before Jyoti’s wedding in August 2014. They discovered lupus had spread throughout her body, leaving her no choice but to undergo chemotherapy or face imminent death. Jyoti began chemotherapy treatments in October 2014, which lasted for five months. However, the chemotherapy severely compromised her immune system, causing internal damage and scarring in her lungs.
In 2015, doctors diagnosed Jyoti with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), a rare autoimmune disorder. They also informed her that MCTD had caused pulmonary fibrosis, which required her to depend on oxygen support around the clock. “The moment I learned about MCTD, doctors also informed me that I needed continuous oxygen due to pulmonary fibrosis,” she shared.
Over the years, Jyoti searched for a lung donor but faced repeated disappointments. Despite these challenges, she has continued to fight for her life by managing her condition with oxygen therapy and specialized care.
Jyoti’s decision to pursue hospice care marked a turning point in her journey. Hospice care provided her with the resources and support she needed to improve her quality of life despite her terminal condition. “The word ‘hospice’ can be intimidating. People often associate it with the end of life. However, hospice care allows individuals like me, living with life-limiting conditions, to make the most of the time we have,” she explained.
Jyoti’s resilience and determination to live life on her terms powerfully demonstrate the strength of the human spirit. While she has faced immense physical and emotional pain, she remains grateful for the support she has received from her care team and loved ones. By sharing her story, Jyoti hopes to inspire others facing similar challenges to seek help, embrace life, and find hope even in the darkest moments.
