During such moments, the brain’s “default mode” network becomes active, strengthening skills, absorbing information, and boosting creativity.

In the early days of Microsoft, Gates followed a personal ritual called Think Week, a dedicated time twice a year spent alone in a remote cabin, accompanied only by a stack of books. No guests were allowed, not even family or colleagues. He used this quiet time to think deeply and read extensively. According to The Wall Street Journal, this routine led to several major ideas, including the early concept for Internet Explorer in 1995.

Another example is Leonardo da Vinci, famously known as a contemplative genius. He was said to spend hours staring at his painting The Last Supper in silence, only to walk away without making a single brushstroke, a form of reflection in solitude.

When approached mindfully, solitude can become a powerful mental tool. Here are a few ways to make the most of it:
