UN Warning: 4 Million Lives at Risk Due to Trump’s Aid Cuts
Light House Denver – The UN warns that over 4 million AIDS deaths and 6 million new HIV cases could occur by 2029 if the U.S. ends foreign aid. According to a report cited by Euronews, U.S.-led investments over the years have significantly reduced global AIDS deaths to their lowest levels in more than three decades. These programs have also provided life-saving medication to millions of people across various countries.
Over the past six months, a decision by President Donald Trump to abruptly suspend foreign aid has severely shaken healthcare systems in developing nations. In its latest report released Thursday (July 10), the UN AIDS agency (UNAIDS) highlighted the dangers of this policy shift. It warned that global progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS is now at risk.

“This wave of funding cuts has disrupted supply chains, forced health facilities to close, left thousands of clinics understaffed, hindered prevention programs, interfered with HIV testing efforts, and compelled many civil society organizations to scale back or shut down their HIV-related services,” UNAIDS reported.
Beyond the financial blow, the aid suspension is also undermining international solidarity. UNAIDS expressed concern that other major donor countries might follow the U.S. lead. In addition, global cooperation is at risk due to growing geopolitical tensions, climate crises, and international conflicts.
In January, President Trump ordered a full suspension of U.S. foreign aid. This included the $4 billion previously pledged for the global HIV response in 2025. He later shut down the U.S. foreign aid agency that had been a central pillar in distributing global health funds.
As a result, developing countries face the collapse of critical healthcare systems. Many of them rely on external funding for up to 90% of their HIV/AIDS programs. This is not just a matter of numbers. It represents the lives of millions of people who now stand on the brink of a humanitarian crisis.
