Light House Denver – Trump fires U.S. military General Charles Q. Brown Jr., also known as CQ Brown, in a surprising move on Friday night (February 21, 2025). The announcement, made through a social media post, shocked the public as President Donald Trump dismissed the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Trump announced Brown’s removal on his Truth Social platform. In his post, he expressed gratitude for Brown’s over 40 years of service in the U.S. military.

“I want to thank General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown for more than 40 years of service to our country, including his tenure as the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a great man and an outstanding leader, and I wish him and his family the very best,” Trump wrote. Interestingly, the announcement was made while Brown was traveling to the U.S. southern border, according to Al Arabiya on Saturday (February 22, 2025).
Trump named retired General Dan Caine as Brown’s successor. Caine, a career fighter pilot, previously served as the Associate Director for Military Affairs at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Trump praised Caine as a key figure in the defeat of ISIS. “Many so-called ‘military geniuses’ said it would take years to defeat ISIS. General Caine, on the other hand, said it could be done quickly, and he succeeded,” Trump stated. He also claimed that Caine had not been promoted under the previous administration. However, he would now take on a critical role under his leadership.
Newly appointed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also commented on the military leadership transition. “General Caine embodies the spirit of a warrior and is the right leader to face today’s challenges. I look forward to working with him,” Hegseth said in a statement published on the Pentagon’s website.
He also acknowledged Brown’s service, which spanned over four decades. “General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown Jr. has served with great honor. I have known him as a wise advisor and deeply respect his dedication to our country,” Hegseth added. Furthermore, Hegseth emphasized that the Trump administration was now installing new leadership focused on the military’s core mission: “To deter, fight, and win wars.”
In addition to Brown, two other senior officials were also removed from their positions: Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti and Air Force Vice Chief of Staff General Jim Slife.
Moreover, the Pentagon announced plans to terminate approximately 5,400 employees who were still in their probationary period. This move is part of the administration’s effort to reduce the civilian workforce within the Department of Defense by 5 to 8 percent.
“As the Secretary has made clear, retaining individuals whose contributions are not critical to the mission is not in the public interest,” the Pentagon stated. This decision marks a significant shift in U.S. military leadership under the Trump administration, focusing on efficiency and restructuring national defense.
