James Gunn Is Writing Another Superman Film, Is a Sequel on the Way?
Light House Denver – Writer and director James Gunn has confirmed that he is once again actively working on a new story involving the character Superman. The announcement sparked speculation among fans: is this a sequel to Superman (2025)?
The news emerged after a fan asked Gunn on Threads what he was working on after finishing the promotional tour for Superman. The DC Studios boss responded that he’s now focused on two things: promoting Peacemaker Season 2 and writing a “sequel.”
“Peacemaker [Season 2] press tour!! and writing the [Superman] sequel!!!” Gunn wrote on Thursday (July 31).
Gunn’s statement quickly caused confusion. Many followers recalled that he had previously mentioned writing a DC Universe (DCU) project featuring Superman in a major role, but not as a direct sequel.

One user, @alexromval, asked for clarification: “Is this the same film you mentioned earlier, where Superman would have a major role but it wouldn’t be a sequel? Or is this actually SUPERMAN 2?”
Gunn then responded with a clarification: “Oh yeah, sorry. It’s the same film. Superman has a big role. It’s not Superman 2,” he replied.
This update comes while Superman (2025) is still showing in theaters. The film serves as the launching point for the new DC Universe, a reboot of the DC franchise now overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, chosen after an extensive audition process. A star-studded cast joins him, including Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.
Under the leadership of Gunn and Safran, DC Studios has laid out an ambitious plan titled DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Superman (2025) kicks off this chapter and will be followed by several new titles, including:
In addition, other titles like Teen Titans, Bane & Deathstroke, and Sgt. Rock are currently in early development, signaling a massive expansion of the DCU in the years to come.
